9 Creative Ways to Celebrate Her Birthday

 Birthday celebration

As we get older, birthday celebrations can feel unnecessary, seem too indulgent or like something only reserved for children. Planning a party for yourself often feels silly, and the thought of organising a day of activities that everyone will enjoy gives you a headache, not to mention how busy everyone seems to be with their own lives. Taking on this task for your partner means that not only will you have an opportunity to spoil them rotten, you're enabling them to relax and just enjoy a day that is often marked by stress and disappointment. Here are seven creative ways to celebrate her birthday this year.

Plan a full day of activities and festivities

Your partner would probably be excited by one activity on their special day, but why stop there if you can surprise them with a whole day of fun! This kind of surprise takes a lot of planning, time and patience, but if you can pull it off it will be totally worth it. What you spend the day doing depends entirely on your partner and their preferences, but the day could look something like this:

8:00am – let your partner sleep in a little more than usual, and surprise her with breakfast in bed. This could be homemade by you if you’re wannabe chef, or be made up of some lovely pastries from a local bakery and a warm coffee.

9:00am – tell your partner to put on some comfortable clothes and get ready for the day.

10:00am – visit a day spa and treat your loved one to a manicure, pedicure or treatment of her choice.

11:30am – check out the local boutique shops for some window shopping, or perhaps, to buy a few special items.

12:30pm – take her to a quiet café for a long lunch.

2:30pm – go to a local art gallery, catch an afternoon movie or go for a massage – whatever your spouse enjoys the most.

5:00pm – head home to get changed for dinner and for some downtime before heading out again.

7:00pm – surprise your partner with dinner at a fancy restaurant, with her close friends and family. Let the champagne flow!

There are so many ways this day could go, depending on your budget, your partner’s taste and how much time you have, but the key is to plan in advance!

Gifts for every year of birth

Regardless of how much money you want to spend, spreading out gifts is a fun way to make your special someone’s birthday last even longer. If they’re turning 40, give them a little gift for the 40 days leading up to their big day, whether it’s something big like a piece of jewelry, or something small like a birthday cupcake. This one is all about the thought, so don’t break the bank!

Bake a birthday cake from scratch

Showing your loved one how much you care often comes down to the details, and going to the effort of making a birthday cake is an excellent way to express your love. Whether it is a masterpiece or a train wreck, you’ll have fun telling her about your adventure in the kitchen!

Birthday balloons

Plan a scavenger hunt

This one certainly takes a bit of work, but if you can pull it off, you’ll be considered the best boyfriend in town. Scavenger hunts are all about solving riddles, answering questions and dashing around town trying to track down clues. There are so many resources online to help you, but there are a few things to think about before getting started:

  • How big can the scavenger hunt be? You may want to hide clues around your local area, or just keep it confined to your house.
  • What is your theme?
  • How complicated can your puzzles be?
  • What will the major prize at the end be? You holding a bouquet of flowers, a bottle of champagne or perhaps even a ring?

Get out of town together for a romantic weekend

If your loved one's birthday falls on a weekend or you can afford to take some time off work, scheduling a weekend away is the ultimate in relaxation. Keep it a surprise by booking in any babysitters, accommodation, flights, and even packing a bag for her, and don't tell her where you're headed until the last minute!

Bouquet of flowers

Plan a romantic picnic

Simple but elegant, filling a picnic basket with champagne, strawberries and chocolates and taking your partner to a park is a cheaper option for those looking to keep things casual. Not only will you get to enjoy some yummy food, it'll force you to spend some quality time together; time that you often wish you had but never prioritise. Commit to spending the afternoon reconnecting.

Fill her house with flowers and balloons

Birthdays are special because they are the one day that everything can be about you, and you have permission to be as indulgent as possible! Filling the house with roses and balloons will make your whole house bright and visually breathtaking, and your partner will feel extra spoiled by your efforts. Don't forget to take plenty of photos!

Take her to a spa or hire a massuse to come to you

Spa days are the ultimate in relaxation and luxury, so it goes without saying that a day spent being pampered will be a good day indeed. If you have kids or can't get away for the whole day, arrange to have a mobile massage therapist come to you, and set up a special place somewhere quiet in the house. Once you've lit the candles, started the music and the massage therapist has arrived, you can take care of the kids while your partner enjoys a wonderful afternoon of attention.

Throw a surprise party

This is definitely not for everyone and should only be attempted if your partner is outgoing, loves a good surprise and you're sure you know who her closest friends are! If you feel confident, however, a surprise party is such a magical way to celebrate with friends and family, and show off your spontaneous side. Pick a day she isn't expecting and make sure it doesn't clash with anything else she has planned, Organise some food (professional catering will certainly help), buy a cake and make everyone promise to arrive at least 30 minutes early!
